Hari races past Korchnoi, snatches lead

NEW DELHI: Continuing his resurgent run, P. Hari Krishna raced past overnight leader Switzerland’s Victor Korchnoi and opened half-a-point lead after the seventh round of the Gyorgy Marx memorial chess tournament in Paks, Hungary, on Sunday.

Hari’s third straight victory, after as many draws, took his tally to 4.5 points. Korchnoi and Hungary’s Csaba Balogh follow at four points. Three more rounds remain.

The 43-move triumph came after Hari’s advanced pawns on the kingside made the veteran give up in an ending involving a bishop each and pawns.

In the concurrently played Paks Cup Grandmasters tournament, Tania Sachdev drew with Hungary’s Gyozo Pataki and occupied the seventh spot following the eighth and penultimate round.

At Abu Dhabi, Akshat Khamparia pulled off a creditable draw against sixth-seeded Belarus GM Aleksej Aleksandrov in the opening round of the Abu Dhabi Masters.

National champion, Surya Shekhar Ganguly, fellow GMs K. Humpy and Tejas Bakre, besides the young B. Adhiban, were among the 28 first-round winners.

The results: Gyorgy Marx Memorial: Seventh round: P. Hari Krishna (4.5) bt Viktor Korchnoi (Swi, 4); Peter Acs (Hun, 3.5) drew with Ferenc Berkes (Hun, 3); Csaba Balogh (Hun, 4) bt Hou Yifan (Chn, 2).

Paks Cup Grandmasters: Eighth round: Gyozo Pataki (Hun, 2.5) drew with Tania Sachdev (3); Vladislav Nevednichy (Rom, 5.5) bt David Smerdon (Aus, 2.5); Attila Groszpeter (Hun, 6) bt Krisztian Szabo (Hun, 5); Gabor Papp (Hun, 5.5) drew w ith Yu Shaoteng (Chn, 4); Mihai Grunberg (Rom, 2.5) lost to Andras Flumbort (Hun, 3.5).

Abu Dhabi Masters: First round (involving Indians): Baadur Jobava (Geo) bt S.P. Sethuraman; Aleksej Aleksandrov (Blr) drew with Akshat Khamparia; Maria Sergeeva (Kaz) lost to Surya Shekhar Ganguly; K. Humpy bt Asghar Golzadeh (Iri); Va leriy Neverov (Ukr) bt Swati Ghate; Aditya Udeshi lost to Elshan Moradiabadi (Iri); Saleh Salem (UAE) bt G.N. Gopal; Tejas Bakre bt Ismail Ibrahim (UAE); M.R.
