Vishnu and Thulasi triumph

KOZHIKODE: Vishnu Prasad and P.C. Thulasi won the boys’ and girls’ under-19 singles titles respectively in the Savitri Devi Saboo State-ranking junior badminton tournament here on Sunday.

The results (all finals):

Boys: U-19: Vishnu Prasad bt Bennet Antony 21-16, 22-20; Doubles: Neeraj Rahman/ Ram C. Vijay bt Bennet/ P.H. Sooraj 21-16, 18-21, 21-19. U-16: H.S. Pranoy bt Deepak Joseph 21-10, 21-17; Doubles: Deepak/ S. Sunjith bt Pranoy/ Ravi Shankar 18-21, 23-21, 21-16. U-13: Arun George bt Adithya Prakash 21-12, 21-5; Doubles: Adithya/ Shyam Prasad bt Pranav Vijay/ Sreedev Keshav 21-15, 21-13.

Laxman signs off in style

R.R. Laxman, who won the title with a round to spare on Saturday, finished his campaign in style, beating N.S. Bhattacharya in the final round of the S.K. Pottekkat all-India FIDE rating chess tournament at Kozhikoede on Sunday.

Important results: 10th round: R.R. Laxman 9 bt N.S. Bhattacharya 6.5; A.K. Jagadeesh 7 drew with P. Karthikeyan 7; Kranthi Kumar 6.5 lost to Saravana Krishnan 7.5; Nath Rupankar 7.5 bt O.T. Anil Kumar 6.5; L. Chatterjee 7.5 bt Adith J agadeesh 6.5; C. Natarajan 7.5 bt Nimmy George 6.5; Sagar Shah 7.5 bt P.V Girish 6.5; Santu Mondal 7.5 bt Lakshmi Narayanan 6.5. Standings: 1. Chess championship

The State u-7 chess championship will be held at the Cochin University of Science and Technology’s Mathematics Department, Kalamassery, on August 18 and 19. The top two finishers will represent the State in next month’s National championship in U.P. Interested boys and girls should report at the venue at 9 a.m. on August 18.
