Praneeth, Sikki win titles

NANDYAL: Sai Praneeth and Sikki Reddy clinched the boys’ and girls’ singles crowns respectively in the State sub-junior badminton championships that concluded at the Nandi Pipes Badminton Academy’s Indoor Stadium courts here on Sunday.

Praneeth defeated Vikas Harsha 21-14, 21-16, while Sikki subdued P. Lavanya 21-17, 21-11.

All the finals were straight set contests and quite facile too. It took Praneeth just 10 minutes to emerge the champion, while Sikki accomplished her task in 10 more.

Praneeth’s ploy was simple; to push Harsha backwards with deep returns. It worked most of the time except when Harsha could position himself well to pound the bird with some steep smashes, the gradient accentuated by the Nellore boy’s height.

Sikki faced her doubles partner Lavanya, after the duo had downed the Visakhapatnam pair of Ch. Mounika and Ch. Moulika 21-3, 21-18. The southpaw’s superiority was never in doubt as her returns showed more variety in line and length, keeping Lavanya all through on the defensive.

The results:

Boys: Singles: Final: Sai Praneeth (Hyd) bt Vikas Harsha (Nel) 21-14, 21-16. Semifinals: Praneeth bt N.V.S. Vijeta (APBA) 21-10, 21-9; Harsha bt A. Naresh (APBA) 22-20, 21-15. Doubles: Final: Prane eth/ Naresh bt Harsha/ Srikanth 21-8, 21-15. Semifinals: Naresh/ Praneeth bt Sri Teja/ Khaja Jaleel 21-14, 21-14; Harsha/ Srikanth bt Rohit Yadav/ Vijeta 21-13, 21-14.
