NEW DELHI: Returning to form, defending champion P. Hari Krishna brushed aside Hungary’s Peter Acs and jumped to the second spot after six rounds of the Gyorgy Marx memorial chess tournament in Paks, Hungary, on Saturday. With four rounds to go, Hari has 3.5 points and trails leader Viktor Korchnoi by half a point. The 39-move victory with white pieces also helped Hari avenge the loss suffered in the first round in the face-off between two former World junior champions. Tania Sachdev provided another reason to rejoice when she, like Hari, scored her second victory in the simultaneously played Paks Cup Grandmasters tournament. The National ladies champion defeated Australia’s David Smerdon with black pieces. She now shares the sixth spot with three others at 2.5 points in the 10-player field. Barua finishes seventh
In the Hogeschool Zeeland tournament at Vlissingen, Holland, Dibyendu Barua finished seventh after being tied for the fifth spot with four others. In the ninth and final round, Barua defeated Israel’s Yochanan Afek to tally seven points. The results: Gyorgy Marx memorial (sixth round): P. Hari Krishna (3.5) bt Peter Acs (Hun, 3); Ferenc Berkes (Hun, 2.5) drew with Csaba Balogh (Hun, 3); Viktor Korchnoi (Swi, 4) drew with Hou Yifan (Chn, 2). Paks Cup Grandmasters (seventh round): David Smerdon (Aus, 2.5) lost to Tania Sachdev (2.5); Andras Flumbort (Hun, 2.5) drew with Gabor Papp (Hun, 5); Yu Shaoteng (Chn, 3.5) bt Attila Groszpeter (Hun, 5); Krisztian Szabo (Hun, 5) drew with Vladislav Nevednichy (Rom, 4.5); Mihai Grunberg (Rom, 2.5) drew with Gyozo Pataki (Hun, 2).
