Chennai: Chennai schoolboy V.A.V. Rajesh is among the three players who are tied for the second to fourth places at the end of the tenth and penultimate round of the S.K. Narasihman Memorial FIDE Rating Open chess tournament here on Sunday. Ram S. Krishnan of BSNL maintains his lead after he scored a win in the morning and played a draw in the evening. In the tenth round, he was held to a draw by Phoobalan after the players reached an ending with opposite bishops. Ram leads by half a point with 8.5 points. He needs a draw for the title tomorrow in the last round. Three players are tied for the second to fourth places with eight points. It includes IM G.B. Prakash of Indian Bank, Chennai, M.V. Lakshmi Narayanan of Kodaikanal and V.A.V. Rajesh who moved from Andhra Pradesh to Chennai for the sake of improving his chess. Another school boy J.Arun made a series of unnecessary queen moves with the white pieces to allow International Master Prakash to regroup and create a mating attack and win in 26 moves. Earlier, in the morning session, top-seed Ram S. Krishnan benefited from C. Praveen Kumar’s early mistake on move number eleven to win under half an hour in 16 moves. Important results (round 10): P. Phoobalan 7.5 drew with Ram S Krishnan 8.5, M.V. Lakshmi Narayanan 8 drew with A. Nagaarjuna 7.5, J. Arun 7 lost to G.B. Prakash 8, M. Vijay Anand 7 lost to V.A.V. Rajesh 8, N. Vigneshwaran 7 drew with Praveen Kumar 7, K.V. Shantharam 7 drew with Abhilash Reddy 7, Pradeep Kumar 7 drew with P. Jayakumar 6.5. Important results (round 9): Ram S Krishnan bt C. Praveen Kumar, G.B. Prakash drew with P. Phoobalan, M.K.A. Russell lost to M.V. Lakshmi Narayanan, P. Maheswaran lost to J. Arun, V.A.V. Rajesh bt R. Sanggeetha, A. Nagarjuna bt J. Mall eswara Rao.
