Ruby Thomas in the limelight

Principal Correspondent

KOLLAM: International Ruby Thomas brought smiles back to the Kerala camp after winning the gold in the 48kg category and in the process set a new record in dead lift on the second day of the senior National powerlifting championships here on Sunday.

This was the host’s first medal in the championship after its men drew a blank in all the three weight categories in which they took part.

Ruby was trailing Pardesi Madavi after the squat event. After failing in both her attempts to clear 150kg, Ruby settled for 142.5kg. She appeared to be weighed down by expectations and nearly fumbled in the bench press. Ruby opened up with 57.5kg but failed in her attempts to lift 65kg.

But her confidence was restored once she warmed up with 150kg in deadlift which left her closest rivals, Pardesi and Jyothi far behind. She then lifted 162.5kg on her second try and broke her own mark (167.5kg set last year) with an effort of 170kg.

In the men’s section, favourite N. Anbu of Railways won the gold in 60kg category but was below his best.

The results:

Men: 60kg: 1. N. Anbu (Rlys) 650kg (262.5kg squat, 132.5kg bench press, 255 dead lift), 2. Mahesh Pedankar (UA) 630kg (250kg, 140kg, 240kg), 3. Rajendra Kumar (U.P.) 605kg (235kg, 127.5kg, 242.5kg).

67.5kg: 1. Jupinder Singh (Har) 692.5kg (282kg, 142.5kg, 267.5kg), 2. K. Alaguraj (RlyS) 675kg (270kg, 130kg, 275kg), 3. P. Mahendran (Bih) 655kg (250kg, 152.5kg, 252.5kg).

Women: 48kg: 1. Ruby Thomas (Ker) 370kg (142.5kg, 57.5kg, 170kg (New, Old: 167.5kg, self, 2006), 2. Pardesi Madhavi (Mah) 337.5kg (145kg, 57.5kg, 135kg), 3. N.B. Jyothi (Kar), 330kg (127.5kg, 57.5kg, 145kg).
