COLOMBO: At least 11 persons, including four soldiers of Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and five cadres of the Tamil Tigers, were killed in continuing fighting in the north in the last 24 hours. A statement by the Defence Ministry claimed that the four soldiers were killed and several others were injured when LTTE operatives triggered a bicycle-laden improvised explosive device at Kovillakkanddi in Jaffna on Sunday morning. It said the device was triggered off targeting an army truck transporting troops. In a separate incident, the military claimed that five LTTE cadres were killed and five others injured when the Tamil Tigers were engaged in mine laying activity in government controlled territory in Nilpokunuwewa area in Weli-Oya. The military said the LTTE team involved in the operation has been attempting to lay a series of improvised land mines targeting both civilian and troops movement in the area. It said that explosions were heard at a distance when more than two land mines exploded accidentally. In another incident, a Sinhalese civilian was killed and four others including two women were injured in an alleged LTTE mortar attack in Anuradhapura district on Sunday.
