The Buckingham Canal is among the water bodies in and around Chennai where PWD will undertake flood mitigation work.
CHENNAI: The Public Works Department (PWD) will take up flood mitigation works in and around Chennai in September at a cost of Rs. 2.5 crore. Spadework on 11 works has begun and clearances will be given shortly. The department will complete the works in a month. The Chief Minister after a review last month gave instructions to the department to implement the works, the official said. Renovation and removal of silt from Otteri Nullah and Virgumbakkam — Arumbakkam drain accounts for about Rs.1.3 crore; removal of garbage and silt in the northern part of the Buckingham Canal — Rs. 30 lakh; and similar works pertaining to central and southern parts of the Buckingham Canal — Rs. 20 lakh each. The department proposed to remove silt, garbage and obstructions in Veerangal Odai and Velachery drain and from the Pallikkaranai swamp to Okkiyam Madagu. Channels carrying surplus water from Ambattur and Porur tanks will be cleared of obstructions at a cost of Rs. 15 lakh.
