Tania stuns top seed

NEW DELHI: Top seed P. Hari Krishna and National women’s chess champion Tania Sachdev enjoyed a ‘Chinese’ feast on way to their first victory in Paks, Hungary, on Thursday.

Hari needed 50 moves to down Hou Yifan to reach 2.5 points from five rounds of the Gyorgy Marx memorial chess tournament.

The victory took Hari to the joint third spot. Veteran Viktor Korchnoi leads with 3.5 points at the half-way stage of this double-round robin event.

Tania resurrected her fortunes in the Paks Cup Grandmaster tournament played concurrently by stunning the top-seeded Chinese Yu Shaoteng in 74 moves.

Tania shared the eighth spot with 1.5 points.

The good news from the Indians continued to pour in as Dibyendu Barua jumped into joint lead with five others at six points after seven rounds of the Hogeschool Zeeland tournament at Vlissingen.

The results: Gyorgy Marx memorial: (fifth round): Viktor Korchnoi (Swi, 3.5) bt Ferenc Berkes (Hun, 2); Hou Yifan (Chn, 1.5) lost to P. Hari Krishna (2.5); Csaba Balogh (Hun, 2.5) lost to Peter Acs (Hun, 3).

Paks Cup Grandmasters (fifth round): Yu Shaoteng (Chn, 2) lost to Tania Sachdev (1.5); Gabor Papp (Hun, 4) bt Gyozo Pataki (Hun, 1); Mihai Grunberg (Rom, 1.5) lost to Attila Groszpeter (Hun, 4); Andras Flumbort (Hun, 2) lost to Vladisl av Nevednichy (Rom, 3.5); Drisztian Szabo (Hun, 3.5) drew with David Smerdon (Aus, 2).

Hogeschool Zeeland (eighth round): Dibyendu Barua (6) bt Vyacheslav Ikonnikov (Rus, 5); Leon Piasetski (Can, 5.5) bt Saheli Dhar-Barua (4.5); Deep Sengupta (4.5) bt Peter Sonder (Ned, 3.5).

Badalona International Open (eighth round): Longman Guliev (Aze, 5.5) bt K. Priyadarshan (4.5).
