HYDERABAD: As expected, Rajesh Choudary, B.K. Raut and Navin Shirodkar won the titles in the Standard, Radial and 4.7 categories of the Laser sailing National championships at the Hussainsagar Lake here on Friday.

Rajesh Choudary also won the Kelly Rao Trophy, which is given in memory of the former champion Kelly Rao to the sailor who emerges overall winner without any discards.

Rajesh coasted to easy victories in the ninth and tenth races to remain unbeaten in the entire competition. The winds were moderate ranging between 10 to 15 knots and thus most of the sailors were able to finish the course and there were no major mishaps.

Rohini impresses

Special prizes were given in various categories. Prominent among the winners were the women’s champion in the Radial class namely Rohini Rau of the Royal Madras Yacht Club who put up consistent displays even in adverse wind conditions, and young Chaitanya Chowgule of Goa Yacht Club who won the title in the youth category showing plenty of courage and tenacity.

Special prizes in the veterans’ categories were not given away due to lack of entries. But clearly the best among them were R.K. Dhandriyal of AYN and Santha Ravi Kmar of Tamil Nadu Sailing Association. Both put up commendable performances.

Laser Standard class: Ninth race: 1. Rajesh Choudary (AYN) 53m 36s, 2. Jasvir Singh (AYN) 54m 27s, 3. D.P. Selvam (AYN) 55m 08s. Tenth race: 1. Rajesh Choudary 52m 03s, N.S. Johal (AYN) 53m 04s, 3. V. Harihara (AYN) 53m 25s.

Overall championship: 1. Rajesh Choudary (8 penalty points), 2. N.S. Johal (21 pp), 3. Jasvir Singh (24 pp). Kelly Rao Trophy: Rajesh Choudary.

Apprentice class: 1. V. Harihara (AYN, 29 pp), 2. Ram Kumar (AYN, 34 pp), 3. S. Anirudh (SSC, 92 pp).

Laser Radial class: Ninth race: 1. B.K. Raut (AYN) 54m 38s, 2. Rajesh Kumar (AYN) 54m 46s, 3. Parvinder Singh (AYN) 55m 10s. Tenth race: 1. B.K. Raut 52m 57s, 2. Dharmendra Singh 53m 09s, 3. Parvinder Singh 54m 13s.< /em>

Overall championship: 1. B.K. Raut (9 pp), 2. Dharmendra Singh (22 pp), 3. Rajesh Kumar (27 pp).

Special prizes: Apprentice: P. Madhu (AYN, 33 pp); Women: Rohini Rau (RMYC, 56 pp); Youth: Chaitanya Chowgule (GYA- 90 pp).

Laser 4.7 class: Ninth race: 1. Abhimanyu (TNSA) 48m 38s, 2. Alekhya Sudam (SSC) 48m 40s, 3. Swetha (TNSA) 49m 10s.

Tenth race: 1. Navin Shirodkar (NDA) 42m 24s, 2. Abhimanyu 43m 39s, 3. Mrinalini (TNSA) 43m 58s.

Overall winners: Boys: Navin Shirodkar (10 pp), 2. Abhimanyu (19 pp). Girls: 1. Mrinalini (20 pp), 2. Swetha (29 pp), 3. Alekhya Sudam (39 pp).
