N.G.M. College takes trophy

Madurai: N.G.M. College (Pollachi) lifted the Muthiah Ambalam memorial Trophy with an all-win record in the semifinal round-robin league in the State-level inter-collegiate volleyball tournament here on Friday.

Sethu Institute of Technology (Kariapatti) finished runner-up and N.G.P. College finished third.

Praveen in sole lead

M.C. Praveenkumar of Vellore was in sole lead in the boys’ section, while former under-7 National champion T. Saranya of Trivallur leads in the girls’ section, at the end of the fourth round of the Tamil Nadu State under-13 chess championship at Palani on Friday.

AJBC advances

Anbu Johnson Basketball Club (AJBC), Chennai, crushed Silver Jubilee SC (Periakulam) 82-26 to enter the pre-quarterfinals of the 29th annual Ravi memorial Trophy State-level open basketball tournament at Dindigul on Friday.

Venkatesh posts win

N. Venkatesh of Madurai beat Kannan of Namakkal 21-7, 21-5 in the men’s singles section in the Yonex Tamil Nadu state senior-ranking badminton tournament, at Sivakasi on Friday.

DSACE in semifinals

Dr. Sivanthi Aditanar College of Engineering (DSACE), Tiruchendur, entered the semifinals of the Anna University zone X inter-engineering cricket tournament defeating Sun Engineering, Nagercoil by 19 runs at Krishnankovil near Srivilliputhur on Friday.

State shooting

About 250 shooters from various clubs will take part in the Tamil Nadu State shooting championship to be held at the Coimbatore Rifle Club Range here from August 12 to 18.

Conducted by the Coimbatore Rifle Club and sponsored by the Lakshmi Machine Works Ltd., the week-long event features 10m air rifle, air pistol, 50m free pistol, 50m rifle and 25m pistol events.

Briefing presspersons here on Friday, A.K. Balashanmugham, secretary of the State association, said the championship would be a qualifying event for the G.V. Mavlankar shooting championship. “This in turn will be the qualifiers for the nationals to be held during October and November in Agra.”
