ISLAMABAD: President Pervez Musharraf has agreed to attend the closing session of the Pakistan-Afghanistan peace jirga in Kabul on Saturday. A Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Afghan President Hamid Karzai called Gen. Musharraf and told him that his presence at the jirga would be a source of support for the peace process. Gen. Musharraf pulled out of the inaugural session of the jirga on Thursday, a move that was linked to the reported plan to impose emergency. A phone call from U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in the early hours of Thursday may have influenced his decision to pull back from the emergency move and to attend the jirga. A Foreign Ministry statement confirmed that Ms. Rice discussed both the jirga and reports of the imposition of emergency with Gen. Musharraf.
