SET FOR EXPANSION: The Chennai bypass road from Tambaram to Maduravoyal will be extended till Madhavaram and the entire stretch made four lane.
CHENNAI: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has started work on the second phase of the Chennai bypass road that will connect Irumbuliyur, near Tambaram, to Madhavaram, at a cost of Rs 505 crore. This is an extension of the 19.2-km-long two lane linking Irumbuliyur to the Maduravoyal junction. The State Highways department coordinated the pre-construction work. The second phase will cover 13 km. “Land acquisition for the project is almost over, except for small areas. The existing two-lane carriageway and the proposed stretch will be four-lane and we hope to complete it by May 2009,” Highways Secretary K. Allaudin told The Hindu on Friday. It will be a toll road and developed on a build, operate, transfer basis. Widening of two bridges near Porur lake, construction of an underpass near Irumbuliyur to facilitate channelling of traffic coming from Tambaram, the international airport and provision of eight more underpasses for local traffic are all part of the project. “Ramps for entry and exit will be provided throughout the bypass. An entire three-km stretch between Maduravoyal and Ambattur in the Ambattur Industrial Estate will be an elevated expressway. The bypass will be connected by ramps to the NH 205,” he said. The Highways department will also start work soon on the Marmalong-Irumbuliyur bridge near Pallikaranai.
