Kumble century denies India world record

Chennai: Anil Kumble made his maiden Test century, but his feat denied India the opportunity to become the only side to score a 600-plus Test score without a hundred!
India was dismissed for a mammoth 664 in its first innings on the second day of the third Test at the Oval, with Kumble unbeaten on an entertaining 110 off 193 balls. England was 24 for one at stumps on Friday. Earlier, Mahendra Singh Dhoni blitzed a powerful 92, while Sachin Tendulkar made 82.
Kumble, now, has consumed the maximum number of Tests and innings (118 and 151) by any cricketer to score his first Test century. The previous record was held by Sri Lanka’s Chaminda Vaas, who notched up his first Test hundred — against Bangladesh this year — in his 97th Test.
India still holds the record for the highest Test score — 524 for nine against New Zealand in Kanpur in 1976-77 — without a century.
