India’s lead shrinks to half point

NEW DELHI: Narrow victories over Australia I and Iran helped India hold a half-point lead over top seed Hungary after the ninth and penultimate round of the World youth under-16 chess Olympiad in Singapore on Friday.

When the action resumed after a day of rest, India stopped Australia I 2.5-1.5 and then went on to beat Iran by a similar margin to tally 25 points.

Meanwhile, Hungary bounced back into contention by scoring 4-0 victories over Switzerland and Uzbekistan for an aggregate of 24.5.

The results: Ninth round: Iran (21) lost to India (25) 1.5-2.5 (Md Khademi drew with Adhiban; Pouria Darini lost to Nitin; Sina Salehian bt Shyam Nikhil; Amir Maleki lost to Swayams Mishra); Uzbekistan (21) lost to H ungary (24.5) 0-4; Australia I (21.5) drew with Philippines (23) 2-2; Indonesia (22.5) bt Singapore I (20.5) 3-1; Iceland (20) bt Vietnam (20.5) 2.5-1.5; England (18.5) lost to Turkey (22) 0.4.

Switzerland (17.5) lost to Singapore II (20.5) 0.5-3.5; Singapore III (18.5) drew with Hong Kong I (18.5) 2-2; USA (19.5) bt Australia II (16) 3.5-0.5; Sri Lanka II (15) lost to Malaysia (19.5) 0-4.

Eighth round: India bt Australia I 2.5-1.5 (Adhiban bt Moulthun Ly; Ashwath drew with Junta Ikeda; Nitin drew with Raymond Song; Swayams Mishra drew with Max Illingworth); Singapore I drew with Philippines 2-2; Vietnam lost to Uzbekist an 1.5-2.5; Hungary bt Switzerland 4-0; Turkey lost to Indonesia 1.5-2.5; Iran bt USA 3.5-0.5; S.
