Coimbatore: Five officers and five trainees of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) sustained injuries when a grenade exploded during a training session on the Central Training College II (CTC II of CRPF) premises at Kurudampalayam on the outskirts of the city on Friday.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police, CRPF, and College Principal George C Francis said that in-service training was being imparted to constables for promotion as head constables.
Lobbing and firing of grenades from rifles were part of the training.
During the morning session , a Deputy Commandant, an Inspector and three head constables were imparting training.
The grenades fired from rifles normally travelled for 300 metres in air and exploded in seven seconds after landing at the targeted place. One of the grenades failed to travel the distance in the air. It reportedly fell close to the rifle and exploded instantly giving no reaction time for trainers and trainees.
Within 20 minutes they were rushed to KG Hospital. Of the 10 injured, seven are out of danger.
