NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India on Thursday said it would take a position in Parliament on the nuclear deal “consistent with its policy” in the wake of the Left parties’ public declaration against it.

“We oppose the agreement lock, stock and barrel. In the background of the lengthening shadow of American imperialism over India, the agreement is nothing short of an attempt to entangle our country into a complex web of political, economic and military relationship as party of its global strategic partnership. The drift of the Government of India in the direction of coming closer to America is too dangerous to be overlooked,” CPI Parliamentary Party leader Gurudas Dasgupta, Deputy Leader C.K. Chandrappan, S. Sudhakar Reddy and D. Raja said at a press conference.

As for the 123 agreement and the nuclear deal, Mr. Dasgupta said the party would want a full discussion but it was for the Government to decide under which rule it should be held in the Lok Sabha.

The CPI said it would vote against the proposed Central legislation on unorganised labour in its present form. “It is nothing but a hoax,” Mr. Dasgupta said.

While the National Common Minimum Programme clearly stated that there would be a Bill each for unorganised labour and agricultural labour, the Government prepared only one for the whole unorganised labour.

The party demanded that the Government introduce the Lok Pal Bill in view of increasing corruption and malpractices by people in high offices.

During the Parliament session, the party would demand a discussion on the mineral policy, as “rich mineral wealth was being recklessly being handed over to corporates and even being leased to foreign companies.”

The party would ask the Government to come out with an action plan on Justice Rajinder Sachar Committee report on Muslims of the country and on implementation of the Srikrishna Commission Report on the 1993 Mumbai riots.

Mr. Dasgupta said that though the party decided to review its ties with the UPA, “there is still time to ponder over its mistakes and correct the policies.”

Mr. Raja was appointed the group leader in the Rajya Sabha, Mr. Dasgupta said.
