Concern over huge import of oilseed
HYDERABAD: M.V.Rao, MLC and former Special Director-General, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), on Thursday expressed concern over the huge import of oilseed and called for achieving self-reliance in the sector.
Inaugurating a two-day ‘Monitoring and Evaluation Workshop’ of the World Bank-supported National Agricultural Innovation Project (NAIP) here on Thursday, he pointed to the drain on the exchequer due to import of oilseed and stressed the need to enhance their production and productivity to attain self-reliance. He wanted NIAP to focus on disadvantaged agri-regions through consortia-approach in frontier areas of agriculture. Mruthyunjaya, national director, NAIP, gave an overview of the initiative aimed at improving the livelihood of rural people living in “disadvantaged regions” through innovative systems. P.S. Sidhu, Task Team Leader, World Bank, said there was a need to build partnerships and pool resources to build social capital for sustainable model of rural development.
