Sensex falls 208 points
MUMBAI: The stock market snapped its two-day winning streak with the BSE Sensex falling 208 points on cues from Europe where markets turned weak after France’s biggest bank BNP Paribas suspended withdrawals from three mutual funds on concerns related to the U.S. subprime crisis.
The Bombay Stock Exchange Sensex commenced the day with a 234 point gain, but tumbled near the mid-session after European markets opened lower with a sharp fall in banking stocks led by BNP Paribas as well as Germany’s largest lender Deutsche Bank and second-biggest Commerzbank.
The 30-share key index fell 442 points from the high of 15542.40 to settle at 15100.15. It touched a low of 15062.1 points before ending 207.83 points below Wednesday’s close. — PTI
