Disarm Karuna group: U.N.

B. Muralidhar Reddy

COLOMBO: The United Nations on Thursday called upon Sri Lanka to disarm the Karuna faction operating in the east to ensure safety and security for aid workers and residents.

It also urged Colombo to investigate accusations of human rights abuses and urgently conclude probes into the killings of 30 aid workers in the last 18 months.

At the end of his four-day visit for a first hand assessment of the ground situation, U.N. Undersecretary General John Holmes wanted a “mechanism that allows people to have confidence in the answers that are being given” on incidents related to human rights violations.

“It is important that the disarmament of the Karuna faction should happen as soon as possible,” Mr. Holmes told reporters here.

Separately, the Defence Ministry claimed that the troops had killed at least 10 LTTE cadres in two separate incidents in the Palamoddai and Kallikulam areas.
