Youth in jail for sending e-mail threat

CHENNAI: A 23-year-old person from Tiruchi was arrested by the City Cyber Crime police on Thursday on charges of sending an e-mail threat to the Chief Minister and his family.

The police team tracked the youth based on the Internet Protocol (I.P) address from which the email was sent. Then based on on-the-spot enquiries, they arrested S. Suresh Kumar, a youth running a small software firm.

According to the police, the Chief Minister’s Cell forwarded the mail to the Chennai Police Commissioner’s office. Commissioner of Police G. Nanchil Kumaran directed the cyber crime police attached to the Central Crime Branch to register a case.

A team led by Assistant Commissioner of Police (Cyber Crime) M. Sudakar, who zeroed in on the internet parlour, questioned some persons who had visited the browsing centre at the specific hour the mail was sent. Subsequently, they picked up S. Suresh Kumar of Subramaniapuram after a thorough examination. Based on a confession the police arrested him. He was remanded to judicial custody. The police said that the accused had pursued B.E course in a private engineering college near Tiruchi between 2001 and 2005, but had arrears in some subjects.

One investigating officer said the accused was aggrieved that the examinations he took were tough and had demanded in his mail that the entire batch of 2001 be declared passed. He was a first-time offender, another officer said.
