Nelord ekes out six games against Onozawa

Madkekar meets Gursharan or Vignesh

LUDHIANA: Aditya Madkekar warmed up for the challenges ahead with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over his practice partner Kiran Nandakumar in the first round of the Harvest Academy $10,000 ITF men’s Futures tennis tournament at Jassowal on Monday.

The fourth-seeded Madkekar has been dominating his matches against Nandakumar in recent months and had not dropped a game in their last encounter last week in Delhi, when the latter retired midway through the second set. Thanks to a good draw, Madkekar may have it easy in the next round as well, as he will meet the winner of the match between qualifier Gursharan Singh and wild card P.C. Vignesh.

One-sided

The three other singles matches of the day also proved one-sided, as the Indian players Yannick Nelord, Navinderpal Singh and Karunuday Singh failed to put up a fight against the foreign opponents, winning a mere nine games between them, possibly because of the high humidity in the morning. Of course, Nelord fought better than the other two inexperienced players, as he managed to eke out six games against Arata Onozawa of Japan.
