Hari Krishna, Tania start on a losing note

NEW DELHI: Defending champion P. Hari Krishna opened his title-defence on a disastrous note when he crashed to local favourite Peter Acs in the fifth Marx Gyorgy memorial chess tournament in Paks, Hungary, on Sunday.

In the battle between two former World junior champions, Acs managed to avenge the loss suffered in the first round of the previous edition. Hari surrendered in 45 moves .

Veteran Viktor Korchnoi stopped Chinese girl Hou Yifan in the battle of generation. In the game between two Hungarians, Csaba Balogh defeated Ferenc Berkes.

In the concurrently played Paks Cup Grandmasters tournament, National women’s champion Woman Grandmaster Tania Sachdev also began with a loss. She went down to third-seeded Hungarian GM Attila Groszpeter in the 10-player round-robin competition.

At Vlissingen, Holland, Dibyendu Barua and Deep Sengupta won their third round games to share the lead with 19 others at three points in the 11th Hogeschool Zeeland chess tournament.

Marx Gyorgy memorial (first round): Peter Acs (Hun) bt P. Hari Krishna; Hou Yifan (Chn) lost to Viktor Korchnoi (Swi); Csaba Balogh (Hun) bt Ferenc Berkes (Hun).

Paks Cup (first round): Attila Groszpeter (Hun) bt Tania Sachdev; Vladislav Nevednichy (Rom) bt Gyozo Pataki (Hun); Gabor Papp (Hun) bt David Smerdon (Aus); Mihai Grunberg (Rom) drew with Krisztian Szabo (Hun); Andras Fumbort (Hun) dre w with Yu Shaoteng (Chn).

Hogeschool Zeeland (third round): Dibyendu Barua (3) bt Michiel Sijpkens (Ned, 2); Deep Sengupta (3) bt Johan de Wolf (Ned, 2); Loet Niesert (Ned, 1.5) drew with Saheli Dhar-Barua (1.5).

Badalona International Open (fourth round): Anso Jose Gutierrez (Esp, 2) lost to K. Priyadarshan (3).
