HAT-TRICK HERO: Tiger Woods became the first golfer in the U.S. PGA Tour history to claim two hat-tricks of wins in the same event.

AKRON: Tiger Woods won the World Golf Championships Bridgestone Invitational here on Sunday to become the first player in the U.S. PGA Tour history to claim two hat-tricks of wins in the same event.

The World No. 1 came from a shot behind in the final round, carding a bogey-free five-under-par 65 to blow away the field in intermittent rain at Firestone Country Club.

He finished at eight-under 272, eight strokes ahead of third-round leader Rory Sabbatini (74) as well as Englishman Justin Rose (68).

It marked Woods’ sixth victory the past eight times the World Golf Championships event has been played at Firestone. His first three victories came from 1999-2001.

Poor iron play

Meanwhile, India’s Jeev Milkha Singh floundered with his iron play and managed only a 76, his highest for the week, and dropped to 51st spot. Jeev, the Asian Tour No. 1 in 2006, finished with 14-over 294 overall on Sunday. Jeev had two double-bogeys on the front and four bogeys on the back nine. On the positive side, he had just two birdies, both on front nine. Jeev double bogeyed the first and fourth and birdied the second and sixth, but bogeys on the 11th, 14th, 16th and 18th spelt the end of any recovery.

Triple-bogey

At Wichita, Kansas, Arjun Atwal ran into a disastrous triple-bogey on a par-five on the back nine and ended with a two-over 73 that saw him drop to tied 54th at the Preferred Health Systems Wichita Open golf championship.

Atwal, who is attempting to climb back to the US PGA Tour via a top-25 finish on the Money List on Nationwide Tour, saw his hopes suffer a setback with two bogeys and one triple bogey though he did have four birdies. He finished at five-under 279.

Brad Elder (65) emerged winner by four shots over Argentine Fabian Gomez. It was Elder’s second win in the tournament, the first having come in 1999, when he won two events in the Nationwide Tour.

Atwal had bogeys on the first, eighth and 17th and a triple-bogey on par-five 14th. He birdied the third, seventh, 13th and 15th. — Agencies
