BANGALORE: ‘Well begun is half done’. Dr. Ajay Singh of Karnataka began his quest for the National title that has eluded him for the last six years in right spirit topping the heap after the first two batches of the men’s first round in the Allsec Technologies 19th National Tenpin Bowling championship at the Star City Bowling centre here on Monday. Two more batches are to be played this evening. Ajay Singh started off on a bright note with a 195 and followed it up with a 234 pin falls. But slipped in the third with a 160 before picking up again in the next two -235 and 193- to finish with a total pin fall of 1195 for the day and an average of 199.167. Naresh, also from Karnataka, showed some late resurgence after a rather sluggish start to finish on a roaring note. Naresh came up with a string of big scores in the last four games for an average of 197.667 nosing ahead of former national champion Shaikh Abdul Hameed. Hameed, representing Delhi this time, also took his time to read the lanes but once he did it was at his fluent best, accounting for the splits and the spares with panache. Maharashtra’s Dhtruv Sitwala scored two creditable victories on the opening day of the selection trials in the run up for the Macau Open billiards championship, at the KSBA here on Monday. The Mumbai cueist first outclassed former national champion Devendra Joshi 3-1 and then tamed Alok Kumar, after losing the first frame atalso by an identical 3-1 frames. Pankaj Advani had mixed fortunes on this losing out to Devendra Joshi after prevailing over Alok Kumar. Karnataka State Police (KSP) finished off its Super division football league engagements on a winning note, though by a slender odd goal in three verdict over Postal at the Football stadium here on Monday. KSP finished with 21 points and is behind MEG in the second position in the league table. MEG with a match in hand against HASC is already the Super division champion, with 22 points while HASC needs to win all its remaining matches to finish on par with KSP. Karthik got the lead for KSP in the 25th minute and Vinodh Kumar consolidated the lead with a penalty conversion in the 69th; Postal defender Murali handled the ball inside the box to concede the penalty. However, in the 78th minute Einstein netted a consolation goal for Postal which finished its engagements with 13 points. Best School posts win
Best School defeated Maruti Vidyalaya 2-0 in the Dr. G.S. Randhawa memorial inter-School hockey tournament at the KSHA Stadium here on Monday. Sheikh Mohammed Nizam (14th) and Dikshit Kiran (24th) scored for the winner. In another match, Dream–A- Dream and St. Germain’s played out a 1-1 draw with Hema Kumar scoring in the very first minute for Dream-A- Dream and Sunny Joseph slotting in the equaliser (17th). Kendriya Vidyalaya (DRDO) and Sarla Birla Academy shared two goals with Danish (37th) scoring for KV (DRDO) and Abhishek (49th) netting for Sarla Birla Academy. St. John’s got a walk-over from Florence High School. The latter had a prior tournament fixture at Tumkur. Dhanraj Ballal Academy beat Germanites 5-0 while Synergy Sports Club defeated Dhyan Chand Hockey Club (Tumkur) 4-0 in the State ‘C’ division matches.
