Rahul sets the lone mark

BANGALORE: With the big guns of the Sate swimming — Rehan Poncha, Shikha Tandon, Pooja R. Alva away at the National camp in Chennai — it was a depleted field that participated in the Karnataka senior championship at the BAC pool here on Monday.

The honour of setting the lone record of the day went to Rahul Batra of the BAC.

The youngster, who is leaving the country next week on a Rhodes scholarship, bettered his own meet of 26.87 seconds in the 50m butterfly sprint with a laudable effort of 26.12s.

“It is a farewell meet for me and it would be nice to go our with a good show,” said the swimmer, who was very much in the reckoning in freestyle events at the National level till the last season.

If Batra stole the thunder with a record, two other of his BAC team-mates, Sheraz Jason and J.P. Arjun, were not left behind in the podium finish.

Sheraz, who is now studying in Canada and back home on a short break, did well to win the 800m freestyle and 200m freestyle events.

J.P. Arjun won the 400m individual medley and 100m breast stroke.

In the women’s section, Smitha of BAC won a 200m freestyle gold and bronzes in the 50m butterfly and 800m freestyle events.

In the diving contest at Jayanagar pool, Shivaraj A. Mohite of ABBA and Divya of DAC topped in the in the men’s and women’s sections respectively in one metre spring board event.

KTA is overall champion

Karnataka Taekwondo Academy (Bangalore) emerged the overall champion with 56 points in the State championship at Chitradurga on Sunday.

D. Sudhakar, MLA, Challakere gave away the prizes.
