Virudhunagar boys, Chennai girls triumph

Sivakasi: Host Virudhunagar won the boys’ team title, defeating Cuddalore 2-0, while Chennai won the girls’ team title defeating Coimbatore 2-1 in the finals of the Tamil Nadu State sub-junior inter-district badminton championships at AJ Stadium, Sivakasi on Monday.

The results: Boys (final): Virudhunagar bt Cuddalore 2-0 (A.K. Sudharsan bt G. Vignesh Kanna 21-13, 21-17; A.K. Sudharsan & S. Mani Rathnam bt C. Vighesh Kanna & K. Aswathaman 17-21, 23-21, 21-18).

Semifinals: Virudhunagar bt Chennai 2-0; Cuddalore bt Madurai 2-0.

Girls (final): Chennai bt Coimbatore 2-1 (P. Kanthi Visalakshi lost to S. Archana 15-21, 11-21; Kanthi Visalakshi & K. Suneri bt S. Archana & Pooja N. Shah 20-22, 21-18, 21-17; K. Suneri bt Pooja N. Shah 21-15, 21-11).

Semifinals: Chennai bt Madurai 2-0; Coimbatore bt Virudhunagar 2-0.
SIT lifts title

Sethu Institute of Technology, Kariapatti lifted the Karumuttu Thiagarajan Chettiar Memorial Trophy with an emphatic 6-0 victory over PSG College of Engineering, Coimbatore in the final of the 15th annual State-level inter-engineering college hockey tournament at Madurai on Monday.

The results (final):

SIT, Kariapatti 6 (Sathish Kumar 4, Ramesh, Mohan Kumar) bt PSG CE, Coimbatore 0.

Third place: PSNA, Dindigul 1 (Muthu Kumar) bt ACCET, Karaikudi 0.

Semifinals: SIT 5 (Mohan Kumar 3, Ramesh 2) bt ACCET 1 (Thavanithi); PSG CE 2 (Dileepan 2) bt PSNA 1 (Niraipandian).

Special Awards: Forward: Ramesh (SIT). Defender: Ramkumar (TCE). Goalkeeper: Prabakaran (ACCET).
Madurai team excels

Madurai team, represented by S.M. Sekkilar, S.M. Sivakumar, T.R. Krishnan, G. Rajagopal and S.M. Sampathkumar, won the Board-a-match event with a tally of 123 points in the 45th South Zone three-day bridge championship at Madurai on Sunday.

Hyderabad B.A. team finished second with 117 points and Nest team Chennai third with 115 points.
District seniors wins

An unbeaten 68 by M. Mohamed helped District seniors defeat District under-22 team by four wickets in the second one-day cricket match of the three-match series at GTN College ground, Dindigul on Saturday.

The scores: District u-22 team 209 in 35 overs (M. Mohamed Rafik 50, A. Sanjay Madhavan 54) lost to District seniors 210 for six in 43.4 overs (M. Mohamed 68 not out, R. Karthick four for 34).
Sourashtra, Fatima win

Sourashtra College, Madurai retained the men’s title for the sixth successive year, while Fatima College won the women’s title in the Madurai Kamaraj University Champion Trophy inter-collegiate table tennis tournament at Madurai recently.

In the four team-leagues, the teams finished with all-win records.

SVHSS triumphs

Subbaiah Vidyalayam HSS (SVHSS) retained the PSTS Sundaramabal Trophy in the senior girls’ section, while Holy Cross HSS regained the Sundaramabal Trophy in super-senior girls’ section by emerging winners with all-win records in their respective leagues in the 17th annual Tuticorin District schools volleyball championships at Tuticorin recently.

Girls: Super Seniors: (three-team league): Subbaiah Vidyalayam bt Holy Cross HSS 25-12, 25-11; Subbaiah Vidyalayam bt Holy Cross Anglo Indian 25-23, 25-16; Holy Cross Anglo Indian bt Holy Cross HSS 25-11, 25-14.

Sourashtra wins title

Sourashtra College won the title in the Madurai Kamaraj University ‘B’ zone inter-collegiate badminton tournament defeating Madura College 3-1 in the final at Madurai on Saturday.

The results: Sourashtra College bt Madura College 3-1 (Bharath Arun bt Ananda Kumar 14-21, 21-8, 21-13; Virumandi bt Ramachandran 21-12, 21-10; Virumandi & Prasanna lost to Kishore & Ananda Kumar 24-22, 11-21, 19-21; Ananda Kri shnan bt Kishore 23-21, 21-7).
Athletics meet

The Madurai District junior under-14, u-16, u-18 and u-20 athletics meet for boys and girls will be held at Madura College ground, Madurai on August 11. There will be no entrance fees. The selected athletes will represent Madurai in the TN State junior athletics meet at Karur from August 17 to 19.
