CPI(M) bandh peaceful

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: A 12-hour bandh was observed by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in the troubled Nandigram and adjoining Khejuri areas of West Bengal’s Purbo Medinipur district on Monday bringing life there to a virtual standstill. The situation was peaceful; there were no reports of any untoward incident, the State’s Home Secretary, Prasad Ranjan Ray, said here.

The bandh was called in protest against the death of two CPI(M) supporters in clashes between party workers and activists of the Trinamool Congress-backed Bhoomi Ucched Pratirodh Committee on July 29. While one of the men had succumbed to his injuries in a city hospital later that evening the other died a few days later.
