Corrections and clarifications

  • A sentence in a PTI report “Media hype could be counterproductive, says Soli Sorabjee” (August 6, 2007) was: “‘You may tamper justice by mercy but not by sentiments; not by what Bollywood says,’ he [jurist Soli J. Sorabjee] said.” “Tamper” should have been “temper”.

  • The caption of a standalone photograph titled “Companions in diversity” (August 4, 2007, page 1) was: “Under One Roof: One-horned rhinoceroses, bison and wild boar take shelter in highland area inside the Pobitora wildlife sanctuary in the flood-affected Morigaron district of Assam on Friday ….” It should have been Morigaon district. Also, the animal referred to should have been wild Asian buffalo and not bison. In India, the wild buffalo is no w largely restricted to Assam and Chattisgarh. (This picture did not appear in the Karnataka editions.)

The caption of the accompanying PTI photograph in a report on the flood situation “Floods displace hundreds of animals in Kaziranga park” (August 4, 2007) was: “Tough Day: Cycle rickshawmen find it hard to push their vehicles in a waterlogged area of Dimapur, Assam, after a heavy rainfall on Friday.” Dimapur is in Nagaland.

  • Referring to an article “New wonders?” (The Hindu-Magazine, July 29, 2007), a reader said the piece cited the Pyramids of Giza, Egypt, to be the only honorary member. However, the website of the New Seven Wonders Foundation enlists the Great Wall of China, Petra in Jordan, Christ Redeemer in Brazil, Machu Picchu in Peru, Chichen Itza in Mexico, the Colosseum in Italy and the Taj Mahal in India as the new seven wonders. The Pyramids are among the finalists. The writer clarifies that a press release from the foundation said that as the Pyramids of Giza are an honorary candidate, this cluster of monuments was kept out of voting. The list of wonders mentioned by the reader is the official final list of Seven Wonders. The foundation has also said that the pyramids will be acknowledged and will always remain a part of the 21 finalists.

  • The contraction of the Central Forensic Science Laboratory, Hyderabad, is CFSL, and not CSFL as mentioned in the heading and text (in two instances) of a report “Kafeel case: CSFL yet to give its report on hard disks&# 8221; (August 6, 2007).

  • A reader questioned a report “India’s first mobile court inaugurated [at Mewat, Haryana]” (August 5, 2007), saying that Madras (Chennai) used to have mobile courts. Madras used to have mobile courts but they were used only for traffic offences and petty cases. (A policy note 2004-05 of the Home Department, Government of Tamil Nadu, says that there are four mobile courts functioning for the trial of traffic offences. Two are in Chennai and one each at Coimbatore and Madurai.) The mobile court in Mewat, Haryana, would be the first full fledged court as it will deal with both civil and criminal cases.
