On 123

This refers to the editorial “A sound and honourable 123” (August 6). The India-U.S. civil nuclear accord appears fair and will hopefully augment our civilian nuclear programme.

Our team of negotiators deserves praise for ironing out an agreement that takes care of our national interests. India should exercise similar prudence while negotiating with the Nuclear Suppliers Group and pursue a foreign policy that does not toe the U.S. line.

Siddarth K. Raj,

Madurai

What the government now needs is the support of the Left parties and the BJP. The editorial is right in cautioning that the deal should not compromise India’s independent foreign policy.

N. Sivaraman,

Maraimalainagar

The objection to the deal from various quarters cannot be justified. What is the alternative to a deal for the supply of fuel to our nuclear power plants? It is for our government to ensure that we get an uninterrupted supply of nuclear fuel without hindering our strategic programmes and without selling our country to the U.S.

K.R. Viswanathan Pillai,

Chennai

The cleverly worded frozen text makes the accord’s interpretation ambiguous. It offers enough scope to be interpreted in a manner that suits the governments of both India and the U.S. The fact of the matter is that in the case of things going wrong, India stands to lose heavily. The correct thing to do would be to evolve an all-party consensus and take all parties on board as any decision will affect the nation as a whole.

K. Jacob Jose,
Dubai

While the BJP’s opinion is of little importance, what really matters is the opinion of scientists. The last thing we want to hear after their retirement is that the deal is all flawed and that they were forced to endorse it for political reasons.

Devraj Sambasivan,
Alappuzha
