Hearing on MGP petition today

Special Correspondent

PANAJI: The Supreme Court on Monday will hear the petition of the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) filed last week challenging the order of the Goa Assembly Speaker Pratapsinh Rane restraining two members from voting in the crucial floor test in the State Assembly.

The twin MGP MLAs, presently with the Opposition alliance, withdrew support of the Congress-led coalition Government around 10 days back leading to the present political crisis in the State.

They were restrained by the Speaker through an ex parte ad interim order ahead of the floor test directed by the State Governor S.C. Jamir for the Kamat Government in crisis, which eventually led to the survival of the beleaguered Government.

The vote of confidence conducted in a controversial manner by Mr. Rane had invited protests from the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Opposition alliance.

On its part, the BJP has also filed petitions in the apex court challenging the Speaker’s actions in the House on July 30 during the floor test and also prayed to the court that the Chief Minister be directed to seek vote of confidence again.
