Corrections and clarifications

* * It is the Aedes mosquito and not ades, as misspelt in an article “The long term damage to Kerala’s health” (Op-Ed, August 2, 2007). The sentence also made a reference to the Aedes being a spec ies of mosquito. Aedes is a genus of mosquito originally found in tropical and subtropical zones. The name comes from the Greek aedes, meaning “unpleasant or odious”, so called because of the diseases this mosquito tra nsmits, including dengue fever and yellow fever. (There are over 2,500 different species of mosquitoes throughout the world. Each mosquito species has a Latin scientific name. A review in the year 2000 led to a change in the name of many mosquitoes belonging to the genus Aedes.) Scientists at the J. Craig Venter Institute, Rockville, Maryland, U.S., led by Dr. Vishvanath Nene, have also sequenced the Aedes aegypti genome, the mosquito that carries yellow fever and dengue fever. The re search has been published in the journal Science.
