NEW DELHI: Prakash Amritraj went down 6-7(1), 5-7 to Wesley Whitehouse of South Africa in the second and final qualifying round of the $600,000 Legg Mason Classic tennis tournament at Washington DC. The 23-year-old Indian Davis Cupper has inched closer to the Indian No.1, the 215th-ranked Rohan Bopanna, and has been ranked 262. Meanwhile, Bopanna will meet qualifier Michel Kratochvil of Switzerland in the first round of the $125,000 Challenger tournament at Segovia, Spain. In doubles, Bopanna will continue with Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi of Pakistan, as the successful partnership has collected two Challenger titles back-to-back at Manchester and Nottingham. The third-seeded pair will take on James Cerretani of the U.S. and Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic in the first round. Despite his third title from four finals on the trot, Bopanna is still nervously placed close to the top 100, a career-best 101 with 517 doubles points. Mustafa Ghouse, a finalist at Nottingham and placed an impressive 146 in doubles, also figures in the doubles draw as the fourth seed along with Frank Moser of Germany.
