Big win for Evergreat HC

Madurai: Twenty-seven goals were scored in three matches on the opening day of the 15th Rajamani Kanagamani Ammal memorial Trophy State-level hockey tournament, organised by the Reserve Line Sports Club, at the Madurai Police Centenary Stadium, here on Monday.

Evergreat Hockey Club (Vadipatti) posted a 10-3 victory over Nethaji Sports Club (Kovilpatti).

Southern Railway wins

At Karaikudi, Southern Railway (Chennai) retained the Dr. Dharmambal Namashivayam Trophy defeating SRM Rising Star Basketball Club (Chennai) 64-53 in the final of the State women’s basketball championship.

The results:

Southern Railway (Chennai) 64 (Anitha 15, Athirai 10) bt SRM Rising Star BC 53 (Sangeetha 10, Vijayalakshmi 11).

Krithika in sole lead

At Rajapalayam, Pon N. Krithika of St. Joseph’s College of Engineering (Chennai) is the sole leader in the girls’ section with eight points at the end of the ninth round of the Shri TP Textiles State junior chess championship on Monday.

She needs only half-a-point in the remaining two rounds to win the title as she has widened her lead over her nearest rivals, P. Sivasankari and S. Athirai of Dindigul, by one-and-a-half-point.

In the boys’ section, R. Pradeep Kumar of Chennai continues to be the sole leader with 7.5 points and is one point ahead of three other players, V.A.V. Rajesh, P. Saravana Krishnan and G. Santhosh Kumar.

VMJ HSS posts win

At Madurai, host VMJ Higher Secondary School defeated Vikaasa School 52-16 in the inaugural match of the 22nd Mangaleswari Trophy State-level inter-school basketball tournament on Monday.

Ten share lead

Ten players including the top-seeded S. Ganesh Babu of Thiagarajar College are in the lead with three points each at the end of the third round of the Madurai Kamaraj University chess tournament on Monday.

At Tiruchendur, Arulmign Kalasalingam College of Engineering (Krishnan Kovil) beat Kamaraj College of Engineering (Virudhunagar) 3-0 in the final of the Anna University Zone X inter-engineering women’s table tennis tournament, organised by the Adithanar College of Engineering, recently.
