Young Orions crowned champion

BANGALORE: A poor third quarter cost Mysore’s BEML dear against Young Orions SC in the title clash for the ‘B’ division league honours for the M.C. Srinivasa Memorial Trophy. At the Sree Kanteerava Stadium outdoor courts here on Monday evening, Young Orions prevailed 67-64 after being 29-33 down at the halfway mark.

Young Orions with a win over State’s top side Vijaya Bank this season in an invitation tournament at Kolar, began well to end the first quarter at 17-13. But some insipid shooting and loose ball-handling enabled the Mysore side to come out firing and go into the break with a 33-29 advantage.

Changing the equation

But all that altered after the change of ends as Sriram, Anirudh and lanky Naveen revelled under the boards to take the stuffing out of the BEML lads, who managed just nine points. Puneet managed a string of three-pointers for Young Orions.

A 55-42 lead indeed looked handy enough for Young Orions or one felt so. But the gritty BEML lads with the induction of veteran Srinivas came up with a do-or-die effort in the final four minutes to not only bridge the 17 point deficit but also came within striking distance at 64-66 when Supradeep converted one free-throw and missed the second.

A rebound and conversion with just four seconds left would have tilted the match in BEML’s favour but it was not to be as Supradeep himself committed a foul and Britto accepted the free-throw gleefully to put the issue beyond doubt for Young Orions.

The two teams will figure in the senior division in the next season.

The results: Final: Young Orions SC 67 (Sriram 18, Naveen 15, Puneet 15) bt BEML (Mysore) 64 (Supradeep 22, Keshava 14). Easy for Canara Main
