Bangalore: The Boost Cricket Cup tournament that will feature 92 City schools was formally launched at a press conference here late on Saturday night. The under-17 tournament, that will commence on Monday, has been an annual event on the KSCA’s fixtures list though the then sponsor was Parle. And now with a new sponsor — Glaxo Smithline’s Boost, the tournament, as KSCA secretary Brijesh Patel said, “should give a boost to a lot of our promising junior cricketers.” The tournament will be organised by Procam International in association with the KSCA. Last year’s top 16 have been seeded straight into the second phase and the remaining 76 will be divided into 25 groups of three each. The top teams of each group will compete in a knock-out league and then the top four will join the seeded 16 in the final phase. The tournament will feature limited overs matches though the quarterfinals, semifinals and final will consist of two-day matches. The winner of the Bangalore-leg will be richer by Rs. 18000 while the runner-up will get Rs. 12000. The Boost Cricket Cup will also be played in Chennai, other venues in Tamil Nadu, Hyderabad, Baroda, Delhi, Punjab and Mumbai. The champion side from each venue will then compete in an all-India inter-school tournament that will be announced later. The sponsors also propose to select 20 players for a coaching camp.
