Hari finishes third; Chanda, Kunte share second spot

NEW DELHI: P. Hari Krishna lost to eventual champion Vassily Ivanchuk in the ninth round and settled for the third spot in the Montreal International chess tournament that concluded in Montreal on Saturday.

Hari’s 41-move loss in Petroff Defence kept him at 5.5 points.

Ivanchuk with seven points finished a point clear of Sergei Tiviakov, who drew with Canada’s Pascal Charbonneau.

In the Quebec Open, Sandipan Chanda and Abhijit Kunte shared the second spot with six points from nine rounds, also played in Montreal. Kunte drew the final round with champion Andrey Rychagov of Russia. Chanda finished in style by beating Russia’s Leonid Gerzoy. Both Indians remained unbeaten in the event.

In the Dutch Open at Dieren, Holland, Dibyendu Barua continued to share the second spot with eight others at four points after drawing the fifth round with Israel’s Zvulon Gofshtien. Holland’s Dimitri Reinderman leads at 4.5points.

In the Politiken Cup, young G. Rohit, seeded 18th, lost the last two rounds to finish 34th in the 10-round competition in Copenhagen.

Hari Krishna (5.5); Sergei Tiviakov (Ned, 6) drew with Pascal Charbonneau (Can, 3); Gata Kamsky (USA, 5) lost to Pavel Eljanov (Ukr, 5); Emil Sutovsky (Isr, 4.5) bt Kamil Miton (Pol, 3.5); Nigel Short (Eng, 2) lost to Mark Bluvshtein (Can, 3.5).

Final standings: 1. Ivanchuk, 2. Tiviakov, 3. Hari, 4. Eljanov, 5. Kamsky, 6. Sutovsky, 7. Miton, 8. Bluvshtein, 9. Charbonneau, 10. Short.

Biel Masters (sixth round): Deepan Chakkravarthy (4) drew with Miaden Palac (Cro, 4); Mohammad Al-Modiahki (Qat, 4.5) bt D.
