84 police teams to patrol State Highways

K.T. Sangameswaran

CHENNAI: The State Government has accorded sanction for 84 police teams to patrol 42 stretches of the State Highways.

Similar to patrols on National Highways, the teams, each comprising a sub-inspector, four grade II constables and a grade II driver, will function in two shifts. About Rs.6.69 crore has been sanctioned for the scheme.

Forty-two vehicles, purchased under the modernisation of police scheme, will be given to the teams. Sanction has been accorded for purchasing mobile phones, breathalysers, radar guns, reflective batons, jackets and wireless sets at a cost of Rs.1.11 crore.

A sum of Rs.5.58 crore will go towards expenditure on pay and allowances for the staff and fuel.

Already, 160 teams patrol 80 accident-prone stretches of National Highways in the State round the clock, and are linked to Emergency Accident Relief Centres (EARCs).

The Government claims “introduction of continuous highways patrolling and strict enforcement of the Motor Vehicles Act has reduced accidents to the extent of 21 per cent.”

A study on patrolling of national highways had recommended that highway patrol staff should not be diverted for other duties.
