CHENNAI: The practice of journalism in India has been made more democratic and accessible with the rise of various new media, and the margins now seem to have moved in much closer to the centre, Sashi Kumar, chairman, Media Development Foundation, said on Saturday. Releasing a book, ‘21st Century Journalism in India’, authored by Nalini Rajan, an associate professor of Asian College of Journalism, he said the striking aspect of contemporary journalism was that the producerly function had devolved to civil society, as seen in the evolution of citizen journalism, though issues of credibility and reliability were still a concern. Also, the hinterland of journalism had opened up with the rise of the blogosphere, though this was still a quasi-journalistic space. There was a need for self-reflexivity in journalism, especially as the newspaper had evolved into a dynamic and responsive medium these days, he said. Oxford Bookstore organised the function in association with Sage Publications. One of the critical gaps in writing about the practice of journalism was the lack of quality material on broadcast journalism, Nalini Rajan said. There was a need to include representational material on the hitherto unrepresented sections of the population such as Dalits and women. The book contains a collection of essays by practitioners and teachers of journalism on topics such as representationality, plurality of practice, media in perspective and future trends. A panel discussion on various issues in the practice of journalism was organised. Sandhya Rao, Editor, Tulika Publications, D. Ravi Kumar and K. Kalpana, social activists, and Subashini Dinesh of the Asian College of Journalism, participated.
