Students’ meet to be held

TIRUCHI: The Students Islamic Organisation of India (SIO) plans to conduct a students’ conference in Mumbai on November 25, focussing on the present educational system and the ways to redefine it to mark the SIO’s completion of 25 years.

As a prelude to the conference, the organisation plans to organise a three-day national workshop on Education at the Aligarh Muslim University from August 6, the SIO’s national president Bishruddin Sharqi told media persons in Tiruchi on Saturday.

The workshop would discuss in length different philosophies of education besides analysing the educational system after Independence, the impact of globalisation on education, the government policies connected with education and the ways it could be redefined.

He said the theme of the Mumbai conference would be “Redefining Education- Regaining Struggle – Renovating Society, SIO Awakening the Nation,” in which former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, British MP George Galaway and other educational experts would participate.

The SIO would run three caravans — one each from New Delhi, Kolkata and Thiruvananthapuram — from November 1.

It would touch various universities, students and public gatherings across the country before culminating in Mumbai on November 25.

The caravans, comprising the present and former leaders of the SIO, would stage dramas, exhibitions to create awareness on education and issues connected with it.

The Mumbai conference would also emphasise on morality among students besides taking up aspects of how students were affected by drugs and the present-day lifestyle. The SIO has planned to release a students’ manifesto at the Mumbai conference, Mr. Sharqi said adding that the idea of holding it was to initiate a nation-wide discussion on education.

The organisation, he said, was completely against commercialisation of education though it was not averse to private parties entering the field. However, the Government must evolve a mechanism to check commercialisation, he added.
