Expo to take tourism to a new high

BOOST FOR Tourism: M. Rajaram, Director of Tourism, visiting the Andra Pradesh stall at the India International Travel Mart at Chennai Trade Centre on Friday.

CHENNAI: The India International Travel Mart, a travel and tourism exhibition, was inaugurated by Director of Tourism and Managing Director of Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation M. Rajaram at the Chennai Trade Centre in Nandambakkam on Friday.

Rohit Hangal, Director, Travel Media Networks, organiser of the exhibition, said that the exhibition was special because it brought all stake-holders of the travel and tourism industry, including travel agents, resorts, airlines, and the Railways, under the same roof. Among the 120 participants, there were also international market players from Malaysia, Egypt and Greece.

According to the organiser, the exhibition is important because India is fast becoming one of the most interesting and productive countries for the travel trade both in terms of leisure travel and business travel. More Indians are also travelling overseas not only for business but also for leisure.

Addressing the press after the inauguration, Mr. Rajaram said there were lot of plans to develop Tamil Nadu tourism.

“This year, we will focus on infrastructure development. The areas of thrust will be medical tourism, eco tourism and rural tourism.,” Mr. Rajaram said.

A travel desk would be set up in all corporate hospitals which had an inflow of foreigners, he said..

Rural tourism would focus on villages with innovative and indigenous practices including art and crafts and organics farming.

Speaking about the exhibition, Mr. Rajaram said there was a need to organise more exhibitions of this nature as they were informative and helped to generate attention.

This is the 31st edition of the exhibition. It will be on until Sunday. Entry is free.
