Indian girls finish fifth

NEW DELHI: Indian girls finished a creditable fifth after recording upset 3-2 victories over Singapore and Kazakhstan in the playoff matches of the Asian junior table tennis championship at Hoengseong, Korea, on Friday.

It was indeed a good comeback by the Indian girls who had lost to 0-3 to Singapore in the league stage of the competition.

The boys, however, finished eighth after losing 0-3 to Vietnam and Hong Kong.

In the cadet boys section, India finished joint fifth with Singapore in the six-team field.

China claimed team honours in all the three section — junior girls, cadet boys and cadet girls — that it participated in. Japan won the junior boys crown.

The individual events will commence on Saturday.
