NEW DELHI: P. Hari Krishna recovered in time to hold Canada’s Pascal Charbonneau in the seventh round of the Montreal International chess tournament in Montreal on Thursday. With leader Sergei Tiviakov (5.5 points) and overnight joint second Vassily Ivanchuk (5) emerging victorious, Hari found himself sharing the third spot with USA’s Gata Kamsky at 4.5 points. Positions unchanged
In the Quebec Open, also in Montreal, Sandipan Chanda held top seed Israel’s Alexander Huzman and Abhijit Kunte drew with Slovakia’s Tomas Likavsky. For the second straight day, draws on the leading boards kept the positions unchanged. In the 39th Dutch Open championship at Dieren, Holland, Dibyendu Barua and V. Saravanan were following the leaders group at 2.5 points after three rounds. All six Indians remained unbeaten. Barua, Saravanan, N. Srinath, Saptarshi Roy Chowdhury and Deep Sengupta won while Saheli Dhar-Barua drew. In the Politikan Cup at Copenhagen, Denmark, lone Indian G. Rohit was sharing the seventh spot with 13 others at 5.5 points after seven rounds. Meanwhile, it stands confirmed that Arun Karthik indeed made his maiden Grandmaster norm and Soumya Swaminathan achieved her first International Master norm in the Balaguer Open at Balaguer. Soumya went on to complete her Woman International Master title after picking up WIM norms in the Sort Open and the Benesaque International in succession. Similarly, Aswin Jayaram also met the technicalities for claiming the International Master title. For Jharkhand-lad Abhishek Das, too, it was a fruitful outing with two IM norms in succession.
