Kadapa trounces Kurnool

HYDERABAD: V. Aswini, who scored eight goals, including a hat-trick, fashioned Kadapa’s impressive 16-0 win over Kurnool in the fourth junior inter-district girls’ hockey tournament at Tirupati on Friday, according to information received here.

In another match, Padmavathi scored four goals including a hat-trick for Krishna in its 7-0 win over West Godavari while V. Sudharani scored the third hat-trick for East Godavari in its 11-0 win over Nellore.

The results: East Godavari bt Nellore 11-0; Vizag bt West Godavari 17-0; Kadapa bt Kurnool 16-0; Chittoor bt Prakasham 7-0; Nizamabad bt Nellore 1-0; Krishna bt West Godavari 7-0; Ranga Reddy bt Prakasham 2-0; Anantapur drew with Kurno ol 1-1.

Cricket tournament

The fourth Bandari Srinivas inter-engineering colleges cricket tournament organised by the Sports Coaching Foundation will be held from July 30 to August 17 at the Bansari Srinivas Engineering College in Chevella. Sixty teams from across the State are expected to take part in the event.

Bolarum XI posts win

Bolarum XI scored a solitary goal win over King Koti XI in the quarterfinal of the Salar-e-Millat Challenge Cup prize money football tournament at the Quli Qutub Shah Stadium here. The match-winner came through Mani Bushan in the 12th minute of first-half. He was later declared ‘best player’ of the match.

Yasar, Madhu shine

A good spell by Yasar (five for 40) and a fine knock by Madhu (76 n.o.) helped Food Corporation of India record an eight-wicket win over IDL in the A-Institution league cricket championship here.

The scores:

A-Division (two-day): R. Dayanand 297 (Rahul Ranout 59, Sharath Kumar 57, Eshwar Prasad 43, Mallikarjun four for 55) and 78 for five drew with Team Speed 137 (Sai Venkatesh four for 48, G. Varun four for 41) and 239 (Bharath 98, G. Var un five for 65).

Osmania 273 (Sohail Doria 89, Md. Sajjad Ali 73, Ayub Baig five for 87) vs. Vijay Hanuman.

A-Institution league (one day): IDL 108 (Yasar five for 40) lost to FCI 112 for two (Madhu 76 n.o.).

Easy for Ivy

Ivy League Academy scored a 20-8 win over Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in the Dr. Emily Emanuel inter-school basketball tournament for boys and girls here on Friday. Rajiv was the top-scorer with 15 points for the winner.

No sweat for JHIC

Jubilee Hills International Centre scored a comfortable 44-23 win over Rahimpura Playground in the Hyderabad district annual basketball league championship here.

The scores:

SCR 55 (Nihal Yadav 15) bt NBA 30 (Sam 12); JHIC 44 (Nithin 16, Sankeerth 12) bt Rahimpura 23 (Rocky 13); Secunderabad Club 49 (Jacob 17, Ankit 12) bt Flying Asteroids 34 (Arjun 16, Suraj 10).

Laptops for players

For someone who eclipsed the record of GM Pentyala Harikrishna to become the youngest-ever qualifier for the National ‘A’ chess championship from Andhra Pradesh, it was a day to remember for youngster Ch. Meher Chinna Reddy when he was presented a laptop by Mr. M. Bhaskar, IPS and Additional DGP (Legal) on Thursday.

Thanks to the initiative of cyberchess.co.in, a website designed and managed by IM Lanka Ravi, and the timely response from Sameer Salgaokar, a chess lover and also vice-president of All India Chess Federation, Meher Chinna Reddy and M.R. Lalith Babu, who was the other player from the State to have qualified for the National ‘A’, were presented with the laptops.

“We believe that the laptops would be of immense help to the players in preparing for bigger challenges,” Ravi informed the media.

Efforts lauded

For the record, Lalith Babu was given a laptop a few days ago. Bhaskar lauded the efforts of Ravi and hoped other senior players would follow suit in promoting young talent in the State.

Inter-district athletics

Hyderabad District Athletic Association will organise the AP Senior inter-district athletics meet and competitions in throws in all age groups at the GMC Balayogi Stadium on July 28 and 29.

About 600 athletes from all over the State are taking part in the meet.

Inter-schools basketball

The sixth Rev. Fr. Devasia memorial inter-school basketball tournament for boys and girls will be organised by St. Patrick’s Alumni Network (Secunderabad) at St. Patrick’s School (Secunderabad) from August 1 to 6.
