PUDUCHERRY: The Coast Guard station here will be strengthened with the induction of a plane and two helicopters of the maritime agency’s air fleet in the coming months.

The CG headquarters has approved the shifting of some of the air operations from Chennai to Puducherry.

A Dornier aircraft, a Chetak helicopter and an advanced light helicopter will be shifted to Puducherry, Commandant Arun Saxena, Commanding Officer, CG station at Puducherry told The Hindu.

The CG planned to conduct air operations from the Pondicherry airport for surveillance along the Tamil Nadu coast.

The Coast Guard had approached the Airports Authority of India representative in Puducherry and the Territorial Administration officials for allocation of land inside the airport for building its hangar, he said.

There was no time-frame fixed for starting operations, but the agency wanted to launch it soon. Once the base was ready, most of the sorties undertaken along the coast, would be launched from the airport.
