Medak sets 100 NGP villages as target this year

Staff Reporter

SANGAREDDY: Medak district Collector has asked all the 29 sarpanches who have received Nirmal Gram Puraskars (NGP) during the last two years, to adopt at least 3 more villages each of their choice to reach the target of 100 awards this year as wished by the Chief Minister during his visit to Medak recently.

Addressing a two-day workshop organized by the district Unicef and Medwan, the Collector announced that the Unicef would reimburse all travel and other incidental expenditure incurred by the sarpanches in the process.

No gastroenteritis in NGP villages

Explaining the advantages of sanitation in villages, the Collector said that there were no cases of gastroenteritis in the NGP villages because of the strict sanitation regime followed. However the Collector advised the sarpanches, MPDOs, MPTCs and village secretaries to emulate the low cost Maharashtra model. He said that the villagers in the neighboring State were able to build a septic toilet at a cost of Rs 350 per unit by improvising cement walls with bamboo sheets.

Infant mortality

The project director of Integrated Child Development Scheme Sailaja said that the NGP has its positive impact on the woman and child welfare in the district. While Medak stood on the top with respect to utilization of iodized salt in the State, the infant mortality rate has come down to almost half.
