Chennai: An interesting and intense competition of golf is around the corner when the South India Ladies Golf Association (SILGA) hosts the Madras Ladies Open and Handicap championships at Kodaikanal from August 7 to 10. That around 50 entries are assured is in itself a tribute to the endeavour of the organising committee for keeping the enthusiasm alive for the participants from across the country. As the first item in the calendar of the regional championships, the S.I. Ladies Open assumes more significance. Down memory lane
At a press conference here, Lalitha Balasubramaniam, the chairperson for the competition and a player of renown from this metropolis, dwelt somewhat nostalgically on the progress of the event since its inception in 1979. Ms. Lalitha, who will be participating in the championships, said as many as 18 in the juniors and 12 in the sub-juniors section would be seen in action. Madhur Khanna, president, SILGA, outlined the efforts to promote the sport among women and their success in that direction to maintain the club’s quasi official status. Three divisions
The championship at the Kodai Club will be played over four days as 72 holes stroke play. The event is open to golfers with a valid handicap of 36. There will be three divisions, gold for 12 and below, silver for 13-24 and bronze for 25-36. The prestigious gold division will feature some top stars like Sharmila Nicolet of Karnataka, Shruti Khanna of Delhi, along with local competitors, Lalitha Balasubramaniam and Rupa Gurunath. The championship is being sponsored by India Cements, Punjab National Bank and Chennai Port. The tournament committee expressed its gratitude for the support received from N. Srinivasan (India Cements Ltd), and M. Balasubramaniam (Captain, Kodaikanal Golf Club). Mr. Jayanan Satagopal, tournament co-ordinator, welcomed the gathering.
