Rasmussen wins 16th stage

GOURETTE: Michael Rasmussen won 16th stage of the Tour de France and extended his overall lead on Wednesday.

The Danish cyclist crossed the finish alone after the 218.5-km (135.8-mile) ride from Orthez to Gourette-Col d’Aubisque, the toughest ride in the Pyrenees this year.

Discovery Channel Team riders rounded out the top three finishes, with Levi Leipheimer of the United States in second, 26 seconds behind, and Alberto Contador of Spain in third, 35 seconds back.

Meanwhile, Cofidis has pulled out of the Tour de France after Cristian Moreni tested positive for testosterone, the team said.

Italian Moreni failed a dope test for the male sex hormone following last Thursday’s 11th stage from Marseille to Montpellier. — Agencies
