Billiards & Snooker
NEW DELHI: Fresh from his quarterfinal finish at the World Professional billiards championship in Leeds, England, Devender Joshi, will try his hand at carombole, a green baize sport on a table without pockets. “I thought carombole was an interesting variation of billiards and decided to take part,” said Joshi on the eve inaugural National one-cushion carombole championship beginning here on Thursday, with the final scheduled on July 31. The winner of the championship will be India’s entry in in the 2nd Asian Indoor Games in Macau, China from October 27 to November 3. Joshi, who is in the top half of the draw, said that he expected to do well after having lost in the semifinals in the only National three-cushion carombole championship held in 2001. Then three-cushion carombole, a tougher version of this game, was conducted as the 2002 Busan Asian Games had the event in that format. Dharminder Lilly, who recently made it to the final of the Asian Tour pool in Kuala Lumpur, had won the championship in 2001. Lilly has been top seeded and has got a bye into the pre-quarterfinals. Manan Chandra, the runner-up to Lilly, heads the bottom half of the draw that also has Rafath Habib, the Busan Games snooker doubles gold medallist.
