Washington: The United States on Tuesday welcomed the election of Pratibha Patil as President and termed it a “historic” moment for India. “It’s obviously a historic moment for India, and congratulations,” White House Press Secretary Tony Snow told reporters here. The Indian National Overseas Congress (INOC-USA) described Ms. Patil’s election as a victory for the forces, which were seeking to unite the country. Its general secretary George Abraham hoped that her experience in the political arena would stand her in good stead in working for the welfare of all people. Koirala’s message
Nepal Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, in a congratulatory message, expressed confidence that the long and friendly relations between the countries would be further strengthened during her tenure. Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz and Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz have sent their best wishes to Ms. Patil. State President of Vietnam Nguyen Minh Triet also extended his best wishes to Ms. Patil. — PTI
